What is Adinkra?
In the Ashanti language Adinkra means farewell. Our forefathers did not know how to communicate using the alphabet, therefore just before their deaths, they would create symbols, ones that espressed their life experiences, unlocked family secrets, passed on wisdom, gave the family knowledge of their past and even the location of hidden treasures.
Today, there are over 400 Adinkra symbols that are displayed in several pieces from Batach LLC.
For instance, Generation III features three women who appear to be speaking, implied by their open mouths, and handing over nuggets of wisdom from the individual symbols in their hands.

Beginning at the top of the piece with the most dominant female, here are the three symbols and their corresponding meanings:
Akofina: Authority and Power
Gye Nyame: God omnipotent and I fear no one but God
Sankofa: The return to God, to family, to your roots.

Are these ancient symbols still used today?
Adinkra symbols continue to inspire and motivate individuals in Africa and the world over. They play a crucial role in Ashanti culture to this day. Servants of the Ashanti king always take the Akofina synbol ahead of their master, sending as alert that someone with authority and power is about to appear. Those who view that symbol are expected to respond accordingly and make way for the king.

Do Adinkra symbols apply to my life?
Definitely! There are several lessons we can adopt! Let's talk about Akofina. We have beeen created to be kings and queens in this earth, designed for a specific purpose - our creator has given us athority and power, Akofina. Just like nothing stands in the king's way when the symbol goes ahead of him, no obstacle should stand in the way or block us from fulfilling our purpose in this earth realm. We have all authority and power.
